Why do people have sticks up their s about people calling them selves otakus?

Okay here's what i don't understand if we have no life so what if were proud i'm an otaku i have a life it may suck but i have one i don't date because i don't want to heres how i see it: Some of Japan's otaku use the term to describe themselves and their friends semi-humorously, accepting their position as fans, and some even use the term proudly, attempting to reclaim it from its negative connotations.
