How safe are root vegetables (e.g. potatoes) grown inadvertently in a compost heap?

They are as safe as if they were in the fields. Be sure to scrub them. I sometimes fill a pan with water and throw in some bleach to kill off any microorganisms and let the unpeeled spuds soak for a bit.
